Nel mondo equestre uno degli argomenti più discussi e spinosi riguarda la manipolazione precoce dei puledri. I pareri, a riguardo, sono discordanti.

A prima vista è un saggio che mira a verificare, attraverso una ricerca condotta sul campo, la validità di tale intervento e gli eventuali effetti che un simile approccio può avere sugli equini.

Tale approccio fa riferimento ad un concetto generale della psicologia definito imprinting o stampaggio di un'esperienza. L'esempio più classico del fenomeno è la condotta di seguitamento degli anatroccoli di fronte a Konrad Lorenz che comparve ai loro occhi subito dopo la schiusa delle uova. Tale forma di apprendimento è presente anche nei mammiferi oltre che nei volatili. Questo saggio ripercorrendo la storia della scoperta dell'imprinting ne rileva le caratteristiche fondamentali e sottolinea similitudini e differenze con il processo che si ipotizza si verifichi, nei puledri, subito dopo la nascita.

Il lavoro è arricchito dalla presenza di due muli tra i soggetti presi in esame. Una parte del saggio, al fine di comprendere appieno le azioni e reazioni di tali equidi, è dedicata alla loro ascendenza, alla loro psicologia e alle differenze comportamentali rispetto ai cavalli.

Il titolo fa riferimento ai misteri del cavallo, perché esso è una guida per entrare nel territorio “altro” della mente dell’animale. Si tratta, certamente, anche di un manuale di addestramento, ma soprattutto, di una mappa della sua mente. Tutti gli argomenti trattati sono importanti per capire i movimenti del suo agire, e reagire, e restituiscono al cavallo il suo posto nella relazione con l’uomo. Miller dimostra che i cavalli si addestrano in modo più efficace con metodi persuasivi che coinvolgono il principio della abituazione, della desensibilizzazione progressiva, del condizionamento modellante e del de-condizionamento sfruttando spesso anche il comportamento allomimetico. Questi, rispetto ai sistemi coercitivi, inducono il cavallo ad un comportamento che “vuole” tenere. Così le tecniche di addestramento non coercitive producono cavalli atleti che svolgono perfettamente la loro attività e si divertono nel farlo. Anche se può sembrare che nell’istruzione del cavallo esistono rigide regole da rispettare, occorre sempre tener presente l’infinita diversità dei soggetti; sarebbe assurdo, inoltre, pretendere di applicare un unico metodo di addestramento per raggiungere scopi diversi. Perciò, per ovviare alle difficoltà emergenti da tali varietà, si può maneggiare il puledro subito dopo la nascita. Tale apprendimento non è altro che un processo di imprinting a cui anche i cavalli possono essere sottoposti. Il Dr. Robert M. Miller ha ricercato e sviluppato tale metodo. Ha chiamato l’intera procedura “Imprint Training”.
Il saggio “I misteri del cavallo” sfata molti luoghi comuni relativi all’effetto che una eccessiva manipolazione del puledro appena nato possa incidere negativamente sull’accettazione dello stesso da parte della fattrice. Se fatto correttamente, l’imprinting è efficace allo stesso modo per tutte le razze e produce un puledro calmo, senza paura, amichevole, rispettoso e disposto ad imparare; se, invece, è praticato male darà solo risultati scarsi e probabilmente cavalli con disturbi comportamentali. Applicando male tali teorie si creano falsi miti che generano errate teorie.

Tutti sanno che prima un uomo si avvicina ad un cucciolo di animale selvatico prima riuscirà a renderlo mite ed inoffensivo nei suoi confronti. Ciò che un animale apprenderà in tenera età resterà indelebilmente segnato nella sua mente e condizionerà le sue reazioni, le sue abitudini per tutta la vita. Tale apprendimento non è altro che un processo di imprinting a cui anche i cavalli possono essere sottoposti. Il Dr. Robert M. Miller – rinomato veterinario, medico e docente – ha ricercato, sviluppato e presentato questa tecnica al mondo dei cavalieri e delle amazzoni che desiderano stabilire un legame con i propri cavalli, capirli meglio e aiutarli a vivere più tranquilli. Ha condotto innumerevoli esperimenti con i suoi puledri, massimizzando il processo al momento della nascita e includendo ad esso le procedure di desensibilizzazione e sensibilizzazione. Ha chiamato l’intera procedura “Imprint Training”, una tecnica che viene attualmente utilizzata in tutto il mondo, ed è efficace con ogni razza di cavalli. Probabilmente, è tra le innovazioni più importanti che si sono avute nell’ambito della psicologia equina nel corso dell’ultimo decennio. Con una prefazione del prof. Antonio Lucio Catalano dell’Università di Parma, il libro spiega passo-passo le manovre per effettuare le procedure di imprinting in maniera corretta ed illustra tutte le procedure che coinvolgono il legame, l’abitudine e la sensibilizzazione. Spiega come maneggiare correttamente la fattrice prima, durante e dopo la procedura di imprinting. Il libro descrive in dettaglio come insegnare al puledro a restare legato, ad accettare la cavezza e, in ultima analisi, come gettare le basi che aiuteranno alla formazione del soggetto quando verrà montato. Tutte queste manovre, spiega Miller, faranno includere l’essere umano nella lista delle cose gradite e piacevoli; di conseguenza avremo un cavallo che si fida del suo cavaliere e lo segue spontaneamente. Inoltre per l’allevatore sarà molto più semplice e gli farà risparmiare tempo quando il cavallo dovrà essere ferrato, tosato, medicato e montato e gli permetterà di affrontare senza difficoltà situazioni generalmente critiche come salire sul trailer o superare ostacoli naturali. Il dottor Miller affronta anche eventuali problemi che potrebbero insorgere e la loro prevenzione, inoltre dedica due capitoli ai cavalli da corsa e ai muli.
