all'erario di corte, Marchesino Stanga.
1491
suscitando l'ammirazione generale.
completamente.

The Leonardo's Horse is part of an equestrian monument to Francesco
Sforza, designed by Leonardo da Vinci, 1482-1493 , to be cast in bronze ,
which he managed to complete only a clay model , lost.
In
1482, Ludovico il Moro, Duke of Milan, Leonardo proposed to build the
largest equestrian statue in the world, a monument to his father
Francesco , duke from 1452 to 1466 (the year of his death) , who was
also the founder of the House of Sforza. The
commission is witnessed by a payment by way of advance for the costs
for a model, paid on behalf of the Duke from the superintendent to the
Treasury of the court, Marquis Stanga . We also know that Leonardo's workshop , the Old Court ( on the site of
the Royal Palace), was supplied tools and materials needed for the
fusion of sketches .
The
company was huge , not only for the expected size of the statue, but
also to the intent of the act of sculpting a horse rear up and fall on
nemico.Il project but ' was modified , and the prancing horse probably
created problems of excessive balancing . In addition, the monument was thought of colossal forms , up to four times larger than life . A similar project, therefore, became necessary to redesign the horse
at a walk, and by May 1491 the artist had developed a new model in clay ,
on the occasion of the marriage of his niece of the Duke with the
Emperor of Austria .
The colossal clay model was publicly exposed in 1493 , arousing the admiration of all. It was in fact " 12 arms high cervix " ( more than seven meters) . At
that point, the work must only be covered with a thick layer of wax and
then the " habit " in earthenware , in which to pour the molten metal .
Everything
was ready to really accomplish the work, but the 100 tons of bronze
needed for the construction of the monument were no longer available ,
having been used to build the guns to the defense of the Duchy of Este
from the invasion of French Louis XII . Leonardo abandoned the project and went to Milan.
Upon
arrival of the French troops in the Lombard city in 1499 , under the
command of Gian Giacomo Trivulzio , arch-enemy of the Sforza family ,
the artist was already repaired at Mantua. The
model left to himself in the Castello Sforzesco was targeted by the
soldiery , who used it as a shooting exercise for crossbows , shattering
and destroying it completely.
